Diet Pills: Do They Work?
The most commonly used weight loss medication is Phentermine. Phentermine is an FDA approved appetite suppressant for individuals with a BMI (body mass index) greater than 27 with a co morbidity or BMI greater than 30. It is a prescription medication that has been around for greater than 50 years.
As with any other medication, Phentermine has potential risks and benefits. Most common side effects include dry mouth, constipation, anxiety, insomnia. Additionally rapid heart beat, high blood pressure and maybe even chest pain may occur. For this reason it is very important to have a proper full medical evaluation, including physical exam, labs and ekg before starting phentermine or a similar type of prescription weight loss medication.
Most of the patients I see at our clinic have tried many methods of weight loss before and have failed.
If you are considering use of a weight loss medication in conjunction with diet and exercise please visit our clinic for a consultation.
